In the course of the 3rd project meeting we visited the "Ötzi"-museum in Bolzano/Bozen (Italy). Here is a little bit of information about "Ötzi":
General
General
Ötzi is a natural mummy of a man who had lived about 3300 BC. He was found in September 1991 at the Schnalstal glacier in the Ötztal Alps, at the border between Austria and Italy. For the reason that he was found in the Ötztal Alps the press gave him the name “Ötzi”. Nowadays everybody can visit Europe´s oldest natural human mummy at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaelogy in Bolzano.
Recovery
A German tourist couple found Ötzi on 19th September 1991. After quite a difficult recovery due to the weather conditions and the ice on the glacier, Ötzi was taken to Innsbruck, where his body was analysed by some scientists. However, surveys showed that the body had been located 92 meters inside Italian territory. Therefore Ötzi was taken to Bolzano.
The body
The analysis in Innsbruck showed that he was 1.65 meters tall and his body weight was about 50 kilograms. At the time he was murdered he was 45 years or maybe a little bit older. When the two German tourists found him he just had a weight of 38 kg.
Cause of death
The scientists are sure that Ötzi was involved in a fight before he died. In his shoulder they found a spearhead, so he probably bleeded to death in just a few minutes.
This place Ötzi lay under a layer of ice for over 5000 years.
